FINALLY, A WAY TO MAKE THE PLAYING FIELD EVEN SO EVERYONE HAS A CHANCE TO WIN!!
Why a rating system:
The rating system is nothing new in sports. To name a few, Golf has its handicapping, MLB has the minor leagues, Rodeo has PRCA rankings, and the NCAA has strict rules about how much experience a player may have at each level.
At FFX we usually have four divisions in most of our large tournaments but we have never been able to give away a cash prize at the lower levels because of sandbagging (playing below your level to win easily). Until now, we had no way to police the players. Our new rating system will classify EVERYONE.
Now recreational players will have a chance to compete against players of the same skill level for the cash prize. We also have a Couch Potato division as well.
All players are given one of four Rankings
1. Elite Players
2. Competitive Players
3. Recreational Players
4. Couch Potato Players
Where do you get that Ranking?
Your rank is based on 4 criteria.
1. Knowledge – 40%
40% of your total score – this is your basic knowledge of the game…if a QB gives you a route, do you understand what he is asking….can you call some plays on your own….do you understand general 5man/4man offensive and defensive strategies….is it second nature for you to always need to know down and distance and time left on the clock…..do you know all the rules….do you have any anxiety about playing top teams….is it second nature for you to stop short of a first down on first down….do you know how to handle the game if you are ahead, or vice versa…..if you are playing defense, do teammates have to keep telling you what to do….understanding the culture, landscape, and strategy of our game is very important so we weigh this category much heavier than the others….flag football is not real football and has its own language, can you speak it?
2. Running/Speed/Hip Movement – 30%
30% – for a qb this means making the rusher miss, or for receivers it means to be able to run full speed while turning your hips to make people miss. If you do not have strong hip movements but you run a 4.4 you may score high here as well. However, if you are just off the track team bus and you have never played flag football before it will not matter that much because you will spend five months learning how to run with your hands up high so that you don’t get called for flag guarding, learning to spin in traffic, learning the importance of running north and south (and betting on the fact that someone will miss and if they don’t that you will pick up a few important yards), as opposed to running across the field and getting nothing positive. Also important is do you know how to run so that you use the field to your advantage. The angles of the field matter and the ones that know how to use them are better even if they are slower. Endurance is also key here…you may be fast but how long will it be until your tank is empty? Once again, these skills vary enough from real football to keep this categories rank high.
3. Offense – 15%
15% – can you catch the ball in traffic, can you go up and get it, can you catch a pass running full speed across the field, can you run a good route, can you catch everything thrown in your direction. This category and the Defense category are more related to actual physical skill on the field related to traditional football.
4. Defense – 15%
15% – do you understand cover one and two….do you have a good sense of how to adjust your defense on the fly….do you know what to do if you see a throw-back or if they go in motion….can you cover someone one on one….can you adjust with your teammates during the play and work well with them in multiple game situations….can you back-peddle and go side to side aggressively? This category and the Offense category are more related to actual physical skill on the field related to traditional football.
Cash Tournament Guidelines and Information
Our cash tournaments run nearly every weekend with divisions from Pro to Couch Potato; we list them here so that you can get an idea of where you fit in. We begin with the Pro at number one and work our way to the Couch Potato at number 6. Once you understand this info, check the calendar to see the list of events.
1. Pro Cash Tournament – 4on4 – $1500 Cash Prize
this is the only tournament where you may have ANYONE on your team – if you think you can hang with the big dogs, register for one of these. Should you win, you will be famous in the North Texas Flag Football Circles and will have an extra $1,000 in your pocket. Any new team of players that wins this tournament will also receive an extra $500 for their trouble to be used in any upcoming Pro tournaments. The Pro and College divisions are 4on4 for the same reason that the three point lines are farther back in the Pro’s and the Goal posts are more narrow in the NFL and the Pro Golfers Tee off farther back than the regular golfers. The elite players enjoy more one on one action and so the top two divisions are 4on4.
2. College Cash Tournament- 4on4 – $1200 Cash Prize
You may have 2 Elite players on your team in this tournament. This tournament is for the teams that want to practice for the big Pro tournaments. Since there are only two elite players on each team, you can bet that one of them is going to be the QB. If you are an up and coming QB and you want to play in this division to get better, we can usually find some elite players to help you out. Otherwise get your guys and get in and learn the game. The Pro and College divisions are 4on4 for the same reason that the three point lines are farther back in the Pro’s and the Goal posts are more narrow in the NFL and the Pro Golfers Tee off farther back than the regular golfers. 3. Competitive Cash Tournament – 5on5 – $1,000 Cash Prize
You may have 2 Competitive players on your team or 1 Elite. The rest of the players on the team are recreational. Although this seems similar to the Recreational division, it is much different because of the QB’s in this division. There is a big difference between a Competitive QB and a Recreational QB. Since you can have one Elite player or Two Competitive players in this division, usually if the team has an elite player it is going to be an Elite Qb. If they use an elite QB then all the rest of the players on the team will be ranked Recreational. If a team has 2 Competitive players then one of those players will probably be a QB. In other words, the games in this division are usually played much smarter than the games in the recreational division, even though you are only adding a few Comp or Elite players to the mix.
4. Recreational Cash Tournament – 5on5 – $800 Cash Prize
ONLY RECREATIONAL PLAYERS are allowed to play in the Recreational Tournaments. This is a great place for teams to learn the game. Teams in this division have probably been playing the game for a while but do not have enough experience or skill to move up.
4. Couch Potato Cash Tournament – 5on5 – $600 Cash Prize
ONLY COUCH POTATO PLAYERS are allowed to play in the Couch Potato Tournament. This is usually a new team or a team of players where football is not their primary sport. A lot of guys in this division play other sports but love flag football as well. Teams in this division have never won anything except maybe a Couch Potato Tournament. Usually if you win this division you are moved up to Recreational.
